Milwaukee: Spaces to Places

Milwaukee: Spaces to Places

Milwaukee Spaces to Places was a performative project inspired by The City of Milwaukee’s crisis around foreclosure and excess of empty lots and the inequity of public green space in Milwaukee. Five hand drawn maps, highlighting different empty lots and their history were made and distributed along with bouquets of flowers from the correlating lot.

The map and bouquets were distributed on a mobile flower cart, to people in affluent and touristy areas of Milwaukee. Conversations about Milwaukee's segregation, resources, and our geographical comfort zones, were easily broached after the initial gift of flowers and drawings.

Milwaukee Spaces to Places gallery exhibition allowed visitors to see all five hand drawn maps, samples of earth from each empty lot, and a city map showing the scope of the project's geography. Sculptural elements helped transform the room to a landscape and highlighted the infrastructure that exists without boundaries in our urban spaces.
