ON and OFF Capitol Drive
On and Off Capitol Drive was a large temporary public art installation developed by In:Site and featuring the artwork of many local creators.
Capitol Drive Portraits - was my addition to this collection of temporary art installations. During the summer months I spent many hours in the neighborhoods near 27th and Capitol Dr. I attending public events, safety meetings, scheduled interviews with local business owners, scheduled interviews with neighborhood leaders, walked in the neighborhood and struck up conversations to understand the heart beat of this neighborhood that was hidden by the abandoned AO Smith building and mis-judged as dangerous or blighted by many outsiders.
Interviews, portraits and interactions were then turned into yard signs and billboards. These statements, images, and names of the people who live in and care for the area were brought front and center on the street to share a broader perspective with 40,000 commuters who drove the stretch along Capitol Drive each day.
